The evidence base

Meteorites, the oldest surviving terrestrial minerals, and lunar samples. No rock survives from the planet's first tens of millions of years, so the age of Earth is read from the wider solar system.

What the record carries

    The solar system and Earth formed in the same broad interval, dated by radiometric analysis of meteorites rather than by any Earth rock.

    The oldest dated terrestrial material is zircon crystals from Western Australia, which are older than the rock they now sit in.

Where specialists disagree
  • How quickly did Earth cool into a habitable surface?

    The 'cool early Earth' reading of the Jack Hills zircons is well supported but contested in degree, not in kind.

  • What exactly struck the proto-Earth?

    Impactor size, speed and composition are still recovered from simulations tuned to match isotopic data.

Commonly misread
  • Scientists dated an Earth rock to 4.54 billion years.

    They did not. That figure comes from meteorites; the oldest Earth material is younger and fragmentary.

  • Radiometric dating is a single technique that can be wrong all at once.

    Several independent decay systems with different half-lives converge on the same answer, which is what makes it hold.
