A handful of physical remains and, unusually, far more genetic than skeletal evidence — including DNA recovered from cave sediment.

    They are a separate sister population; both descend from a common ancestor after the split from modern humans.

    Reconstructions are inferred from genetic methylation patterns and a few fragments, and are explicitly provisional.
