How much human history is sitting under post-glacial sea level rise?

While Atlantis absorbs the attention, an entire inhabited landscape the size of a country genuinely disappeared beneath the North Sea within human memory — and trawlers keep dredging up its evidence.

The North Sea floor was habitable land. This is the drowned-continent story that is actually true.

The landscape

At the last glacial maximum, sea level stood roughly 120 metres lower. Britain was a peninsula of continental Europe, and between them lay a plain of rivers, marsh, lagoon and woodland now called Doggerland. It was not a land bridge people hurried across; it was some of the best hunting and fishing territory in northern Europe, and it was occupied.

How we know

Fishing fleets have been recovering Mesolithic material from the Dogger Bank for over a century: barbed antler points, mammoth and aurochs bone, worked flint. Since the 2000s, oil-industry seismic survey data has been reprocessed into detailed maps of the buried river systems, and sediment cores have yielded pollen sequences and sedimentary ancient DNA that reconstruct the vegetation as it drowned.

The inundation was not uniformly gradual. Around 8150 BCE the Storegga submarine landslide off Norway generated a tsunami whose deposits have been identified in Doggerland cores — evidence that at least part of the loss was sudden and witnessed.

What is still missing

Almost all of it. Doggerland is the largest unexcavated Mesolithic landscape in Europe and it lies under water and sediment, accessible mainly through coring and remote sensing. We know it was inhabited; we do not have a settlement plan, a cemetery, or a securely excavated dwelling.
