Why here

Mountains cut the land into small pockets, so political units stayed small; the sea connected them, so ideas did not.

Thin soils favoured olives, vines and goats over grain, which made grain imports strategic and navies necessary.

Silver at Laurion funded the Athenian fleet — a geological fact with a large political consequence.

The origin point of surviving Western historical writing, natural philosophy, and a great deal of mechanical ingenuity.

  • How representative are Athenian sources?
  • What was the real scale of Greek literacy?
05 · Known & unknown

Where the evidence stops

What we know
  • The Antikythera mechanism proves geared astronomical computation existed by the second century BCE.
  • Athenian inscriptions let us audit public accounts, including temple construction budgets.
What we think
  • Surviving sources over-represent Athens; most of what is said about 'the Greeks' is really said about one city.
What we don't know
  • How many people could actually read.
  • How typical Athenian democracy was.
