In 1980, a father-and-son team of scientists reported that a thin clay layer found on several continents contained roughly thirty times more iridium than the rock above and below it. Iridium is rare in Earth's crust and common in asteroids. The conclusion was uncomfortable, expensive to test, and eventually correct: a very bad afternoon roughly 66 million years ago is legible today as a smear of clay you could cover with your thumb.

That is the part of Earth Science people tend to miss. The planet is not a stage that human events happen on top of. It is a set of interacting systems — molten interior, shifting plates, oceans, atmosphere, biosphere — that constantly rebuild the conditions life depends on, and occasionally remove them. Earth does not have opinions about us. It has chemistry, gravity, and a great deal of time.

Earth Science is not one field. It is geology, oceanography, atmospheric science, hydrology and geophysics forced to sit at the same table because the systems they study will not stay separated. The unifying question is straightforward and enormous: how does this planet actually work as a coupled system, and how much of that behavior can we measure rather than assume?

The practical version of that question is even blunter. What changes fast, what changes slowly, and what happens when a slow system gets a sudden input?

Some things are settled to the point of boredom, which is a compliment in science. Plate tectonics is measured, not theorized: satellites watch continents move at roughly the rate your fingernails grow. The atmosphere's composition is directly sampled. Ocean heat content is tracked by thousands of autonomous Argo floats reporting temperature and salinity profiles from the upper two kilometers of the sea. Ice cores in Greenland and Antarctica preserve trapped air bubbles that give direct atmospheric samples going back hundreds of thousands of years.

We also know the planet operates on nested clocks. Weather runs in days. El Niño runs in years. Ice ages run on orbital cycles measured in tens of thousands of years. Continental rearrangement runs in hundreds of millions. Confusing one clock for another is the most common way smart people reach dumb conclusions about Earth.

Interpretation begins where the measurements end. We have strong models for how orbital variation paces glacial cycles, but the amplification mechanisms — how a modest change in sunlight distribution becomes a kilometer of ice over Chicago — still involve estimated feedbacks rather than fully resolved physics. We are confident that the end-Permian extinction, which erased the majority of marine species, was driven largely by massive volcanic activity in Siberia. The exact kill mechanism, and the sequencing of ocean acidification, anoxia and warming, remains an active argument in the literature.

This is the honest middle ground of Earth Science: substantial evidence, real explanatory power, and a standing willingness to revise the details.

Add to that list: earthquake prediction, which remains genuinely impossible at useful precision despite decades of effort, and the deep-interior details of core–mantle coupling, where we are inferring the properties of a place no instrument will ever visit.

Earth Science is the base layer of the Discovery investigation because everything else inherits from it. Life evolved inside these systems. Civilizations rose in the climate windows those systems allowed and collapsed when the window shut. Every archaeological site sits inside sediment produced by processes described here.

This is where the evidence currently points: the planet is measurably active, its clocks are well characterized, and the largest remaining uncertainties are about feedbacks and thresholds rather than fundamentals. That distinction matters. "We don't know exactly how much" is not the same sentence as "we don't know anything," and anyone conflating the two is selling something.
