Reaction time is the clearest example of a sports cliché that the numbers flatly contradict. Nobody 'sees the ball early.' They anticipate earlier, from better information.
What this field actually measures
- Simple reaction time
Time from a single expected stimulus to a single prepared response.
ReferenceRoughly 200 ms to a visual cue and about 160 ms to an auditory one in healthy adults.
- Pitch flight time
How long a pitched baseball takes to reach the plate.
ReferenceA 95 mph fastball arrives in approximately 400 ms, with the swing decision made well before that.
LimitWhich is why hitting is a prediction problem, not a reflex problem.
- Choice reaction time
Response time when several options are possible.
ReferenceRises predictably with the number of alternatives (Hick's law).
