Learning is not the same as performing. Motor learning is the study of what survives the drive home — and it routinely shows that the practice that looks worst on the day produces the best retention.
What this field actually measures
- Retention test
Performance measured days or weeks after practice ends, not during it.
ReferenceRandom (interleaved) practice usually performs worse in session and better at retention — the contextual interference effect.
LimitBeginners can be overwhelmed by interference before it starts paying off.
- Transfer test
Performance on a variation the athlete never practised.
ReferenceVariable practice schedules generally out-transfer constant repetition of one target.

How much of skill difference practice hours statistically account for.
