This is one of the few areas of sport where the evidence is strong, cheap to apply, and widely ignored. Programmes that measurably cut injury rates take about fifteen minutes and no equipment.
What this field actually measures
- Nordic hamstring programmes
Eccentric hamstring work added to normal training.
ReferenceMeta-analyses report roughly a halving of hamstring injury rates in compliant squads.
LimitThe effect collapses with compliance — which is where most programmes actually fail.
- FIFA 11+ warm-up
A structured neuromuscular warm-up programme.
ReferenceTrials report approximately 30% fewer injuries overall in teams that complete it consistently.
- Acute:chronic workload ratio
Recent workload compared with the preceding rolling average.
ReferencePopularised as a spike indicator; subsequent statistical critiques have challenged the method and its thresholds.
LimitTreat it as a conversation starter with the medical staff, not a rule.

Still open
- Why does compliance decay so predictably once a season starts?
- Which workload models survive proper statistical scrutiny?
- How much injury risk is scheduling and travel rather than training?
What we won’t say
We will not describe an injury as bad luck when a well-evidenced fifteen-minute protocol was skipped all season.
- VO-1Evidence before wit
- VO-2Punch at claims, never at people
- VO-3Say the uncertainty out loud
