The Standard on Athletic Development

Youth systems select for maturity and call it talent. Development science keeps producing the same uncomfortable finding: the calendar is doing more of the sorting than the coaching.

What this field actually measures

Relative age effect

Over-representation of athletes born early in a selection year.

ReferenceDocumented across many sports and countries, often with a marked skew toward the first selection quarter in youth squads.

LimitThe effect frequently reverses at senior level — late-born survivors were selected on skill, not size.

Peak height velocity

The fastest phase of the adolescent growth spurt.

ReferenceUsed to bio-band athletes by maturity rather than birth year.

Early specialisation

Year-round single-sport training before adolescence.

ReferenceAssociated with higher overuse-injury and burnout rates without a clear elite-attainment advantage in most sports.

Evidence & metrics

The published work behind the numbers above, and the public datasets you can open to check us. If a claim can’t be traced here, we don’t print it.

National Strength and Conditioning Association · 2016

Sets out evidence-based training progressions for youth and rejects fixed 'windows of opportunity' claims.

  2. Sport specialisation and injury risk in young athletes

Jayanthi et al. — American Journal of Sports Medicine · 2015

Highly specialised young athletes showed higher rates of serious overuse injury than multi-sport peers.

What we won’t say

We will not call a twelve-year-old a prospect. At that age we are largely measuring puberty.
