Coaching is the largest uncontrolled variable in sport. The research that exists tends to focus on the parts that are measurable — practice design, feedback, communication load — and those parts already contradict a lot of tradition.
What this field actually measures
- Practice density
Share of session time an athlete spends in active, task-relevant work.
ReferenceTime-motion audits routinely find large fractions of youth sessions spent queueing or listening.
- Feedback load
Volume of instruction delivered per repetition.
ReferenceExcess concurrent feedback creates dependency and degrades retention.
- Attentional focus cue
Whether a cue points at the body (internal) or the effect (external).
ReferenceExternal focus cues outperform internal ones for performance and learning across a large body of studies.

What we won’t say
We will not treat a win-loss record as a measurement of coaching quality. It is a measurement of roster, schedule, and coaching, undivided.
- VO-1Evidence before wit
- VO-2Punch at claims, never at people
- VO-3Say the uncertainty out loud
