Every technique argument eventually becomes a physics argument. Biomechanics is where 'he just has a natural motion' gets replaced by force, time, and angle — measurable quantities that either support the coaching cue or quietly retire it.
What this field actually measures
- Ground reaction force
The force the ground pushes back with, measured on a force plate.
ReferenceSprinting peaks near 3–5× body weight per step; walking sits close to 1.2×.
LimitPeak force says nothing about how well the force was directed.
- Ground contact time
How long the foot stays down during a sprint stride.
ReferenceElite sprinters at top speed are roughly 0.08–0.11 s per contact.
LimitShorter is not better if the athlete loses force application to get there.
- Sampling rate
How many times per second a force plate or motion system records.
ReferenceForce plates commonly run at 1000 Hz; optical motion capture at 100–250 Hz.
LimitLow sampling rates smooth away exactly the impact spikes that injure people.
