Judgment & the Elect

The Great Judgment

The trial that frames the entire book, announced in chapter 1 and executed in chapter 10.

The short answer

1 Enoch opens with an oracle of the Holy One coming with his hosts and closes each major section with judgment. Sentences are individually specified: Azazel bound in darkness, the Watchers imprisoned for seventy generations, the giants set against one another, the earth cleansed and then restored.

Stated directly in 1 Enoch. Whether it happened is a separate question.

Judgment as a procedure

The text is procedural rather than vengeful. Charges are laid, an appeal is heard and denied, sentences are assigned to named parties, and a timeline is given. It reads like a legal record because that is the register it is written in.
