The Watchers

The Chiefs of Ten

Twenty named leaders, each commanding a division — the org chart of the descent.

In the primary textCh. 6Ch. 7Ch. 8

The short answer

1 Enoch 6 lists twenty chiefs, Shemihazah plus nineteen, each described as a leader of ten. Chapters 7 and 8 then attribute specific teachings to individual names: astrology, the signs of the sun and moon, the reading of clouds, enchantments and root-cutting.

Stated directly in 1 Enoch. Whether it happened is a separate question.

Why the roster matters

Naming is the text's method of accountability. Rather than a faceless crowd, the reader gets a list with assigned responsibilities and, in chapter 10, individually specified sentences. The full roster is set out in the Watchers dossier.

Spellings vary substantially between the Aramaic fragments, the Greek excerpts and the Geʽez manuscripts, which is why the same figure appears as Azazel, Asael or Azaz'el depending on the edition you read.
