Physiology sets the ceiling everything else operates under. It is also the domain where the most confident round numbers — target heart rates, fat-burning zones, magic thresholds — dissolve the moment you measure an individual.
What this field actually measures
- VO₂max
Maximum rate of oxygen consumption during exhaustive exercise.
ReferenceUntrained adults sit near 35–45 ml/kg/min; elite endurance athletes reach roughly 70–85.
LimitA high ceiling does not win races. Efficiency and threshold do a lot of the work.
- Lactate threshold
The intensity at which blood lactate begins climbing sharply.
ReferenceCommonly 75–90% of maximal heart rate, and higher in trained endurance athletes.
- Estimated max heart rate
The '220 minus age' figure printed on gym equipment.
ReferenceThe estimate carries a standard deviation of roughly 10–12 beats per minute.
LimitThat spread is large enough to misclassify a healthy athlete's entire training zone structure.
