Historical Context
Beilock and Carr's putting experiments in JEP: General (2001) gave the field its first clean mechanism: skilled golfers got worse under pressure specifically when attending step by step to execution. Skill that has become automatic is damaged by being watched from the inside.
What the Evidence Shows
There is more than one way to fail. DeCaro, Thomas, Albert and Beilock showed choking arrives by explicit monitoring on procedural tasks and by distraction on working-memory tasks. One label, two mechanisms, opposite remedies.
Anxiety costs efficiency before it costs accuracy. Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos and Calvo's attentional control theory (Emotion, 2007) holds that anxiety weakens goal-directed attention and strengthens stimulus-driven attention, so performers burn more resources to hold the same standard — until the reserve runs out.
Money can make it worse. Ariely, Gneezy, Loewenstein and Mazar ran real escalating cash stakes in the US and rural India and found very high incentives reduced performance on tasks requiring cognitive skill (Review of Economic Studies, 2009).
Two countermeasures have support. Vine, Moore, Cooke and Ring found quiet-eye training sped learning and protected performance under anxiety; Vickers and colleagues found free-throw and field-goal gains. Saunders, Driskell, Hall and Salas's meta-analysis of stress inoculation training found a positive effect on performance under stress, strongest when all three training phases were delivered.
Where It Breaks
The famous results are the shakiest ones.
Baumeister and Steinhilber's home-choke finding (1984) rested on a small set of historical championship series and has not held up in larger modern datasets.
Clutch hitting has resisted detection for fifty years: Cramer's original test and later SABR analyses found no reliable year-to-year persistence. Birnbaum's reassessment makes the fair objection that these tests have low power — failing to detect a small talent is not proving its absence.
And the field's most cited debunking got debunked. Miller and Sanjurjo demonstrated a selection bias in the standard streak analysis (Econometrica, 2018); corrected, Gilovich, Vallone and Tversky's own 1985 data show evidence for a hot hand. Thirty years of confident classroom teaching, undone by conditional probability.
Counterarguments
League-wide NBA shooting efficiency tends to fall in clutch minutes, but with real individual variance — some players' clutch percentages exceed their season marks (Sarlis, Gerakas and Tjortjis, 2024). That is not proof of a trait; it is what a distribution looks like. It is also not nothing.
What would change our mind
Applying the Miller–Sanjurjo bias correction retroactively to the clutch-hitting and putting-streak datasets. High-powered, pre-registered replications of the home-choke effect across leagues and eras. Longitudinal eye-tracking of elite athletes under genuine competitive pressure rather than simulated stakes.
What this does not prove
It does not prove clutch performers do not exist. It proves the statistical record cannot currently distinguish them from noise, and that a single mechanism for choking does not fit the data.
The Standard
Based on the evidence presented, Second City Standard believes pressure is trainable and "clutch" is unproven. The actionable finding is that rehearsing under the conditions you will face — noise, stakes, consequence — has measured effects, while identifying the player with the temperament does not. Train the situation; stop drafting the myth.
