We tested the idea against postseason research, Statcast, WAR, Moneyball, the Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers and Shohei Ohtani — and found that baseball may be measuring value without fully measuring control.
The cliché says pitching wins championships. The analytics revolution taught baseball something more sophisticated. On-base percentage mattered more than traditional thinkers appreciated. Slugging could be priced. Weighted on-base average could describe offensive production. Exit velocity, launch angle, barrels and expected statistics could reveal the quality of contact underneath ordinary box-score results.
Those advances changed Major League Baseball for the better.
But almost every offensive measurement begins after something else has already happened.
The pitcher has the baseball.
He chooses the pitch type. He influences its velocity. He targets a location. He creates movement. He changes speeds. He sequences one pitch against another.
Only then can the hitter respond.
Baseball may have become extraordinarily good at measuring what hitters create without asking enough about who controls the conditions under which that creation is possible.
That distinction — value versus control — is the real subject of this investigation.
Does pitching matter more than hitting in baseball?
Pitching does not make offense unnecessary, and elite pitching does not guarantee a championship. But pitching occupies a structurally different position because the pitcher initiates every standard plate appearance and controls pitch type, velocity, movement, location and sequencing before the hitter can respond. Who Actually Moves First?
Imagine the back row of a chessboard.
A rook does not move like a bishop. A bishop does not move like a knight. The queen can attack space differently from every other piece.
Pitching works much the same way.
A right-handed power pitcher operating from a high release point presents a different visual problem from a left-handed sidearmer. A four-seam fastball behaves differently from a sinker. A cutter attacks differently from a sweeper. A curveball changes vertical expectations. A splitter can imitate a fastball before disappearing beneath the barrel.
Statcast's Pitch Arsenal leaderboard evaluates pitch performance by type and includes measurements such as run value, usage, batting average, slugging, wOBA, whiff percentage, strikeout rate and expected statistics. [MLB Statcast]
The pitcher chooses the problem. The hitter tries to solve it.
There is a simple reason offense dominates sports television, highlight packages, social feeds and baseball conversation before a statistic is ever calculated.
Offense creates visible events.
A home run happens. The crowd rises. The camera tracks a ball into the seats. Exit velocity appears on the screen. Distance is calculated. Runs appear.
Great pitching often creates the opposite experience.
Nothing happens.
No barrel. No baserunner. No rally. No spectacular offensive event for a broadcast to celebrate.
Offensive greatness produces highlights. Pitching greatness frequently produces the absence of highlights.
This is a Second City Standard analytical hypothesis rather than an established psychological measurement. Visible offensive events may simply be easier to isolate, replay and remember than prevented events.
October gives us a natural laboratory because postseason baseball changes the player pool. Weak clubs disappear. Rotations shorten. Scheduled off days change pitcher availability. Managers can concentrate innings among their best arms.
A Baseball Prospectus analysis covering 1993 through 2011 found that strikeouts increased from 16.5 percent of regular-season plate appearances to 18.8 percent in the postseason. Singles declined from 16.0 percent to 15.0 percent, while doubles and triples declined from 5.3 percent to 4.7 percent. [Baseball Prospectus]
The actual postseason strikeout rate of 18.8 percent matched the rate expected from the pitchers in the sample, while the hitters would have suggested a lower 15.3 percent strikeout environment. [Baseball Prospectus]
A separate peer-reviewed study examined 109 years of Major League Baseball history and 370 postseason teams. It found regular-season pitching was the strongest predictor of postseason success in its 1995–2011 period. [109-year MLB study]
Does pitching win championships?
Not by itself. Strong pitching does not guarantee a World Series title. However, historical research indicates that stronger pitching can materially alter the postseason environment by increasing strikeouts and suppressing offensive events. A peer-reviewed study covering 109 years of MLB history and 370 postseason teams found regular-season pitching was the strongest predictor of postseason success in its 1995–2011 period. October Changes the Environment
- Strikeouts increased in the postseason sample.
- Singles declined from 16.0% to 15.0%.
- Doubles and triples declined from 5.3% to 4.7%.
- The observed postseason K rate matched the pitcher-based expectation.
The Atlanta Braves of the 1990s did not simply acquire one dominant pitcher and hope he stayed healthy. They built an era around pitching.
Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz did not attack hitters the same way. Their excellence came through different arsenals, handedness, movement profiles, command and sequencing.
In Atlanta's championship season of 1995, Maddux went 19–2 with a 1.63 ERA, 260 ERA+ and 9.7 Baseball-Reference WAR. Glavine finished with a 3.08 ERA and Smoltz with a 3.18 ERA. [Baseball-Reference]
Atlanta allowed 540 runs during the strike-shortened 144-game season. [Baseball-Reference]
Atlanta did not have one chess piece. It had a back rank.
The central lesson of Moneyball was not false. Oakland exploited market inefficiencies, and baseball had badly misunderstood the value of reaching base efficiently.
What changed over time was the popular retelling.
The 2002 Oakland Athletics won 103 games, scored 800 runs and allowed only 654. The club also had Barry Zito, Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder anchoring the rotation. [Baseball-Reference]
That does not disprove Moneyball. It makes the lesson more complete.
The popular Moneyball story remembers the walks. The 2002 standings also remember Zito, Hudson and Mulder.
Chicago went 11–1 in the postseason. José Contreras, Mark Buehrle, Freddy Garcia and Jon Garland combined for a 2.84 postseason ERA. In the American League Championship Series, White Sox starters accounted for 44⅓ of the series' 45 innings. [MLB]
Chicago essentially removed the opponent's opportunity to hunt for a weak pitcher.
Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and Joe Crede still had to score runs. Pitching did not make offense optional. It changed how much offense Chicago needed.
The White Sox Almost Removed the Bullpen
The 2010 San Francisco Giants finished 92–70, scored 697 runs and allowed only 583 before winning the World Series. [MLB Giants]
MLB's franchise history describes the club's success as revolving around its pitching staff. The Giants led the Major Leagues with a 3.36 ERA, with Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sánchez and Madison Bumgarner anchoring the rotation and Brian Wilson closing games. [MLB Giants]
San Francisco did not need to turn every night into an offensive contest.
The Cubs scored 808 runs and allowed only 556. Their pitching staff posted a 3.15 ERA. [Baseball-Reference]
Sometimes baseball remembers the bats even when the extraordinary part of the mathematical profile is how difficult the team was to score against.
Entering the World Series, Astros pitchers had held postseason opponents to a .178 batting average and .248 on-base percentage while striking out 31.6 percent of opposing plate appearances. Their postseason ERA was 1.88. [MLB]
Astros starters faced 66 percent of opposing batters in the ALCS, the largest share among that season's final four teams. [MLB]
A pitching organization can create value by reducing the number of weak decisions it is forced to put on the mound.
Houston's October Compression
Milwaukee is where this investigation began because the Brewers represent the modern economic version of the question.
A smaller-market organization cannot solve every roster problem by purchasing another established star. It has to create surplus value somewhere.
Through September 3, 2026, Milwaukee was 87–53 with 704 runs scored, 532 runs allowed and a plus-172 run differential. [MLB: Brewers standings]
That matters because Milwaukee does not fit the simplistic version of this investigation. The Brewers are not winning because hitting does not matter. They are scoring plenty of runs.
What makes the organization interesting is the repeatability of its run prevention and pitcher development.
The potentially scalable advantage is being able to manufacture difficult plate appearances without having to buy every difficult pitcher at established-star prices.
Why are the Milwaukee Brewers successful?

WAR is not the villain in this investigation.
FanGraphs' replacement-level framework distributes approximately 1,000 WAR across a full major-league season, with roughly 570 allocated to position players and 430 to pitchers. [FanGraphs]
FanGraphs describes the same structure as a 57-percent position-player, 43-percent pitcher allocation. [FanGraphs]
That allocation does not mean position players possess exactly 57 percent of baseball's causal importance.
WAR asks how much value a player produced. This investigation asks where that player sits in the sequence that creates the opportunity for value.

The WAR Pie Is Allocated
Shohei Ohtani makes the distinction between value and control unusually easy to see because the same athlete can occupy both sides of the confrontation.
Ohtani the hitter receives information. He recognizes pitch type, velocity, movement and location and decides whether to swing.
Ohtani the pitcher changes roles completely. Now he determines which pitch enters the confrontation.
Ohtani the hitter solves the problem. Ohtani the pitcher chooses the problem.

If WAR estimates accumulated player value, perhaps baseball needs another family of metrics for a different concept.
Call it Initiation Leverage.
How much does a player's decision change the opponent's available decision space before the outcome is known?
A future model could ask about arsenal diversity, count leverage, command, location quality, movement, velocity separation, sequencing, platoon advantage, chase generation, whiff creation and contact suppression.

What Would a Control Metric Need to Ask?
Where the Theory Breaks
If this investigation ended with “pitching always beats hitting,” it would not survive serious scrutiny.
Baseball has had offensive juggernauts win championships. Great hitters punish great pitches. Injuries dismantle rotations. Bullpens collapse. Short series create enormous variance.
Baseball Prospectus eventually retired its “Secret Sauce” postseason model after its out-of-sample predictions from 2006 through 2009 succeeded at only about 54 percent. [Baseball Prospectus]
Structural control is not deterministic control.
What This Investigation Supports — and What It Does Not
Supported
Pitchers initiate the plate appearance and can create materially different offensive environments. Published postseason research found higher strikeout rates and reduced offensive events in October, while a 109-year archival study found pitching was the strongest predictor of postseason success in its 1995–2011 sample.
Not Supported
The evidence does not establish that pitching always matters more than hitting, that offense is optional, that WAR is invalid or that elite pitching guarantees a championship.
So Which Comes First?
Baseball cannot be won without scoring runs.
But offense and pitching do not enter a plate appearance at the same point.
One side receives the baseball and creates the initial problem. The other side responds.
Atlanta built around multiple elite starters. The White Sox allowed four starters to throw 44⅓ of 45 ALCS innings. San Francisco led MLB with a 3.36 ERA during its championship season. The Cubs allowed only 556 runs. Houston entered the World Series with a 1.88 postseason ERA. They point toward a different possibility: baseball may have confused measurable contribution with structural position in the sequence that creates that contribution.
The batter may create the most spectacular event of the night.
The pitcher decided what had to be defeated for that event to exist.
He looks in.
He chooses.
Then everyone else gets to react.
Does pitching matter more than hitting in baseball?
