Sports Science: How Fatigue Changes Decision Making

Fatigue does more than make an athlete slower. It can change what the athlete notices, how quickly options are processed, which option gets selected and whether the body can still execute the decision once it has been made.
Fatigue usually gets treated like a stopwatch problem. Legs grow heavy, split times drift, and the jump shot loses its arc. The tackle lands with less force; the swing loses its whip. That story is accurate enough, but it misses the real story. In high-level sport, a tired body is only half the crisis. The far more expensive damage happens upstairs.
When athletes get tired, they do not simply decelerate. They can start thinking in smaller, cheaper pieces. The available menu can shrink. The obvious pass becomes more attractive than the difficult pass. The familiar movement can beat the better movement. Recognition, reaction, technical execution and decision quality can all become vulnerable when mental fatigue enters the equation. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis reported poorer sport-specific reaction time, technical performance and decision-making under experimentally induced mental fatigue, with the most consistent pattern appearing in decision-making outcomes. Fatigue is not merely a reduction in physical horsepower. The research increasingly supports a broader performance problem in which perception, attention, reaction, technical execution and decision-making can deteriorate as cognitive and physical demands accumulate.
Fatigue Is Not Just Physical
The traditional picture of fatigue is wonderfully simple. An athlete runs, jumps, cuts, pushes or fights until the muscles stop producing the same output. Coaches see the decline, television commentators announce that somebody has “heavy legs,” and everybody goes home satisfied that the mystery has been solved.
Except the athlete still has to make decisions.
A point guard late in the fourth quarter must identify a defensive rotation while protecting the ball. A quarterback has to diagnose coverage after the pocket changes shape. A shortstop may have a fraction of a second to decide whether the play is at first, second or nowhere. A fighter has to recognize whether a feint is actually a feint while somebody is actively attempting to rearrange his dental work. None of those jobs disappears because the athlete is tired.
A 2021 systematic review of sport-specific psychomotor performance found that mental fatigue negatively affected several performance outcomes, including decision-making, reaction time and accuracy. The review included research involving healthy participants performing sport-specific tasks after a mental-fatigue intervention. Habay et al., 2021.
That distinction matters because the brain does not exist in some luxury suite separated from the rest of the athlete. It is managing perception, attention, memory, inhibition, anticipation and movement selection while the cardiovascular and muscular systems are already demanding resources.
Sports are therefore not just tests of whether an athlete can continue producing force. They are tests of whether the athlete can continue producing correct behavior while force production, attention and cognitive control are all under pressure.
That is why the most consequential fatigue mistake may not be the one captured by a GPS vest or a velocity chart. Sometimes the athlete still has enough energy to run the play. The problem is that the wrong play has already been selected.
What the Newer Evidence Shows
The most direct recent synthesis comes from a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published in BMC Psychology. Researchers separated sport-related performance into reaction-time, technical-performance and decision-making categories rather than dumping every outcome into one statistical bucket. Lu et al., 2026.
The review reported that decision-making outcomes showed the most consistent pattern. Technical-performance findings also favored impairment under mental fatigue, although heterogeneity across technical studies was considerably greater. Reaction-time evidence pointed in the same direction but came from a smaller evidence base. Lu et al., 2026.
That is a more useful conclusion than pretending all fatigue produces the same consequence. Decision-making appears especially interesting because many sports are essentially enormous collections of decisions disguised as physical activity.
The difference between an NBA possession that produces an open corner three and one that produces a panicked twenty-foot fadeaway may begin with a recognition event occurring several actions earlier. The difference between a clean passing lane and a turnover may be a head turn. The difference between tackling a runner squarely and chasing from behind may be one false step created by one late read.
The box score records the end of that chain. It rarely records the cognitive leak at the beginning.
Basketball is almost unfairly perfect for studying this problem. It combines repeated high-intensity movement with continuous visual scanning, changing spatial relationships, technical precision and rapid tactical decisions. Then, because apparently that was not enough, everybody involved is tall enough to remove passing windows that existed half a second earlier.
A systematic review focused specifically on basketball reported evidence that mental fatigue can impair technical performance such as shooting measures and turnovers while also affecting cognitive outcomes including decision-making and reliance on take-the-first heuristics. Cao et al., 2022.
That concept — taking the first acceptable option — is especially interesting. High-level offense is frequently about rejecting the first available action because a better one develops a beat later. The first pass may be open. The second pass may break the defense. The first driving lane may exist. The kick-out after help rotates may produce the actual high-value shot.
When cognitive bandwidth gets squeezed, “good enough” becomes a dangerous competitor to “best available.”
Watch late-game basketball with that possibility in mind and possessions begin to look different. The issue is not simply whether the shooter has tired legs. Ask whether the possession itself has lost imagination. Did the ball stop moving? Did the team abandon secondary actions? Did a player attack the first defender instead of manipulating the second? Did transition defense fail because somebody recognized the threat one beat late?
None of those questions proves mental fatigue caused the play. Film cannot diagnose an internal cognitive state by itself. But the research gives analysts a reason to look beyond simple physical decline when late-game execution changes.
